After seven years of activity, the EpiSouth Network presented the results it gathered in a final conference, organized by the Italian Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), that will start today in Rome. A recent paper on the New England Journal of Medicine highlighted some of the features that make H7N9 – the bird flu virus now circulating in China – a healthcare case that deserves attention. The first is a diffuse lack of immunity against this strain, due to the scarce exposure on a large scale to hemagglutinin 7 (H7) and neuraminidase 9 (N9) antigens. The second are some genomic signs of adaptation to mammals. The third is the difficulty to spot it in bird flocks, due to its low pathogenicity in birds.

Annual Epidemiological Report from ECDC

The sixth edition of the Annual Epidemiological Report has been released by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). This report provides a surveillance overview about more than 50 infectious diseases in 27 Member Countries and 3 countries from the European Economic Area (Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway). Data came from the European Surveillance System (TESSy) in 2010 and the updates from epidemic intelligence in 2011, and are intended primarily for policymakers, health service leaders, epidemiologists and researchers, and also for the wider public.
